The Jazz Ahead Experience
I’ll be honest, when I first arrived in Washington D.C. to begin my residency at the Kennedy Center. I was wondering what I had gotten into. I had never participated in a “jazz camp” before and this is certainly what it seemed like. “Jazz boot camp” may be more appropriate. Rehearsals seemed endless, we were up early and by the time we got back to the hotel we were exhausted; too exhausted to even think about trying to go out. I was starting to regret my participation.
But on the eighth or ninth day I had a new realization. I saw that through working with the brilliant composers/arrangers that I was grouped with as well as great artists such as Carmen Lundy, Chip Jackson, Winard Harper, the legendary Curtis Fuller, Dr. Nathan Davis, George Cables and Dr. Billy Taylor; my compositions began to take new life. They were shaped and molded until we discovered ways to play them that I had not imagined. After spending hours and hours rehearsing each other’s tunes, I began to see that this is how it should be. This is the approach we as musicians should always take when it comes to our music. The attention to detail, constant evaluation and reevaluation, and dedication to the music should be the driving force in our lives if we are to ever come close to reaching our full potential as artists. The people we were working under were as old as 88 years and they were still working just as hard trying to ensure ours and the program’s success. Why shouldn’t we be able to do the same?
It was then that my complaints and negativity ceased. They served absolutely no purpose anyway but to bring down the mood and harm the quality of the rehearsals and performances. After all, how many opportunities does one get to work side by side with the legends of their industry all for free room and board and money for food? Not many, if any. So in the end I am glad I participated and I appreciate the program. The musicians that I met are some of the greatest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. The experience truly turned out to be a much needed lesson in patience, gratitude, and work ethic ; let alone music. Now comes the time to apply it. Jazz Ahead.

Hope for the Broken Hearted
Holding, holding, and holding on
to those last traces of hope.
Despite all of the optimism, I know
that as surely as the time passes,
as surely as each smile that he puts on your face,
each laugh that escapes your mouth,
each kiss that touches your lips,
and each tear that he wipes from your eyes
the memory of your love for me fades.
So I hold on,
gripping tightly,
fighting for a space in your heart,
and a place in your mind.
No matter how deep down,
I will always be there,
with the strength of all our memories
and the hope of the possibilities,
struggling for, and
clinging to your remembrance...
...until i lose my grip.

When It Comes to You and Me...
Time has brought me to this place
Where all traces of wisdom
That exist within converge
Producing this vision of what
could be, should be, and will be
Between us, if our truest feelings emerge
Let fear submerge to a place undisclosed
While we submit to everything that pride has hold
We shall both be free…
We shall feel, taste, touch, and see that which
Eludes us due only to our own transgressions.
When it comes to you and me our biggest lesson
Is that there is no reason and/or logic in this place;
All that we will understand,
all that we will conquer
Will be all that we face.
We can reach that point that transcends jealousy
And nullifies all insecurity.
For when we are sure of ourselves
they are no longer needed
Yes, past may be past,
but it still must be heeded.
Not to be forsaken, it must be embraced
Despite the others that have entered into this domain
For the lessons it teaches
we will be constantly applying
Not denying its pain,
yet much good can be gained
Because our present is here
And our future awaits.

Summer Romance
In silence among a sea of words
two hearts connect.
With subtle touches and furtive glances
2 minds reflect on desires surrounded by the taboo.
Proceeding with caution yet throwing it to the wind,
Our time together was a living and breathing contradiction.
Needing no validation
but the emotion being conjured and strengthened
with every step taken.
Guilt was forsaken while infatuation reawakened
and selfishness embraced.
The future will be faced but we live in the now.
Don't look forward, don't look back,
this present is yours for the taking.
Temperatures rise as temperatures drop
and neither river nor stream can cool them.
Though surrounded by many, few exist
when twilight propels two into suspended animation.
Water, it is no concern
when drowning in eyes of ebony.
The sun's light fades and darkness relieves us.
Raindrops tease us, but
we provide the shelter.
The path before us is for you to choose.
Someone will win, and someone may lose, but
regret is not an option.
With a dance of flesh under a moonlit sky
anticipation lifts.
One heart may be broken,
but two are fulfilled
and neither wonders
what if?
